DescriptionAs Johan Huizinga has written, "All play means something." And yet in schools, so few games count as "educational." As a result, the games kids and teens play in school seem out of touch with the compelling and social "non-educational" games they play at home.

At Common Sense, we've seen this pattern play out over the past decade. Our aim has been to help the half a million teachers who visit us monthly to choose great games for their students. However, the games we rate highly on our research-backed rubric rarely get used in schools.

This is why we've embarked on a research and curriculum project, funded by Dalio Philanthropies. This effort seeks to better understand teachers' attitudes toward games and learning, and how to connect play happening at home to learning happening in school. This presentation will share insights from our research as well as learning activities we've created.
