DescriptionThere are, arguably, several reasons why games in academia are not taken as seriously as they could be. They don't fit neatly into the traditional framework of academic research and teaching; game studies and game design in almost every form are by their nature interdisciplinary, again not fitting neatly into the silos of academia; and games are perceived as a diversion, fun, and thus not part of the stereotype of the staid academy. Nevertheless, there are areas where the legitimization of games has moved forward. This panel looks at some of the existing issues as well as the steps various universities, organizations, and individuals have taken to legitimize games in academia. The multi-pronged approach addresses game publishing, scholarship, and redefining scholarship.
