Description | This paper describes use of industry-based capstone design courses to provide service learning opportunities to students. In this type of course, students work as members of small teams to complete software development projects. These projects proceed from requirements gathering, to analysis, design, implementation, and delivery of products to real-world clients. In recent years, several of these projects have involved the development of serious games for real-world clients in the non-profit sector. Serious games and simulations can be good candidates for student projects that provide opportunities to manage projects with real-world development constraints and deadlines. These projects can help students learn how to use their roles as computing professionals to address community needs. Initial student survey data indicates satisfaction with the service learning experience. |
