Description | A Beautiful Story is a single player 2D game on the experience of domestic violence, informed by a survivor. It eases players into this difficult topic by moving the setting from real life to that of penguins.
A Beautiful Story capitalizes on the romantic notion that penguins mate for life, and establishes that they can fly when they fall in love. The game is structured into three abusive cycles. Players could leave at the end of each - if willing to give up on their "beautiful story...". In the honeymoon phase Guli (=player character) and Gorgo collect sparks together to fuel their relationship flame that allows them to fly. Tensions rise as Gorgo's demons appear and Guli has to tread carefully to stave them off, modeling "walking on eggshells". The abusive incident is inevitable and once Guli tries to leave, this becomes the most dangerous part of the game. |
