| Description | Stories from the Cores is a suite of three short, touch screen enabled computer games designed to be part of a travelling museum exhibit called "In Search of Earth's Secrets. The games were (www.insearchofearthssecrets.com ), sponsored by the National Science Foundation's Advancing Informal Science Learning (AISL) program and centered on many Earth science concepts explored by the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP). The game is aimed at 6th grade through adult audiences, specifically targeting underserved, rural and female users, with a choice of English or Spanish subtitles. The games were developed by Ceisel & Associates with Patrice Ceisel, Barbara Becker and Matthew Board.
The games feature the efforts of the deep sea, scientific exploration vessel, Joides Resolution. The ship extracts core samples from the ocean floor for the purposes of scientific research. As science communicators in informal settings, we follow a tested approach in developing an interactive: ⢠Focus on a single idea ⢠Tell a story ⢠Engage users with an interactive approach ⢠Know your users and test frequently For audiences, brief and visually engaging experiences will often set the foundation for curiosity and possibly deeper involvement with a subject at a later time or place. In order to create that experience, we needed to understand as much as possible about what we wanted to communicate, and then synthesize and reshape what we learned to create a simple and appealing storyline. Stories from the Cores is comprised of the following three mini games: Mysteries of the Core: A game about prehistoric, glacial lake Missoula in Missoula Montana and the megafloods that formed the Scablands in Idaho. Deep Dark Life: A game about chemosynthetic microbes that thrive under the ocean floor. Die-nosaur: A game about the extinction of the dinosaurs. Webiste: http://www.sleektiki.com/sftc/ |
